Johan van der Keuken

Johan van der Keuken (1938-2001) took up photography at an early age; in 1955 he published 'We are 17', the first of several albums of photographs. In 1956 he enrolled at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques in Paris.

From then on, his work as filmmaker and photographer developed round the idea of ‘reality perception’. Since the mid-eighties, Johan van der Keuken has been honoured with retrospectives and exhibitions all over the world and has gained several awards for his oeuvre, including the Persistence of Vision Reward (San Francisco Film Festival) and the French Critics’ Literary Award for his book Aventures d’un Regard (1999), the Grand Prix de la Scam (Paris, 2000), and several awards in the Netherlands. In 2001 The Lucid Eye. The photographic work 1953-2000 was published.
