Jan Luiten van Zanden

Jan Luiten van Zanden (b. 1955) is an emeritus professor of global economic history at Utrecht University.

His research focuses on major societal questions such as (gender) inequity and the transition to sustainability. His recent books include The Discovery of Nature: The Development of Biodiversity in the Netherlands from the Ice Age to the 21st Century (2021) and, with Maarten Prak, Pioneers of Capitalism: The Netherlands 1000-1800 (2022). He wrote Lucy’s Daughters with the help of assistant professor Sarah Carmichael.
